The Charcoal Maker, winner of the RHS Sustainable Product of the Year Award, is a straightforward device for making your own charcoal at home. Fill this home Charcoal Maker with wood, place it in the hot core of the fire and wait for steam. This is the moisture being driven out of the wood. After 2 hours, remove the Charcoal Maker from the fire and set it aside to cool. Don't be tempted to open the end caps until the Charcoal Maker is completely cool, as warm charcoal will slowly start to burn on its own. Once cold, open the Charcoal Maker with the opening tool to reveal your homemade charcoal. Enjoy the pleasure of making your very own charcoal for your next BBQ.

I must admit I was sceptical about it but thought I would give it a go.
The item arrived promptly and I was impressed with the build quality. I did as the instructions directed, lit a fire, filled it with dry wood and watched the smoke come out of it! The smoke then turned into an orange flame as the gasses burnt off and once that had ended, I let the fire go out. I returned a few hours later, check it was cool enough to handle and opened it - to find charcoal (I don't what else I expected to find!).
Quite simply - it works! I have since done another batch and now have a bag full of charcoal. I have plenty of wood to burn, so will experiment with different types going forward but I highly recommend getting one if you have access to wood to turn into charcoal and enough scrap wood to keep the fire going.

My son and I gathered up some branches we had pruned from our Damson tree last year which were nice and dry, cut them to fit the Charcoal Maker, added some other bits of Silver Birch we had then had a Barbecue.
Afterwards the whole family gathered around the Kadai with a drink and we put the Charcoal Maker in as instructed. The following day I did indeed have charcoal. I was amazed though how much the contents had reduced in size. Probably 75% less volume than I started with.
